I Needed Active Release Technique

December 12, 2007

Somehow, I injuried my hip. This made running painful and even cycling wasn’t going so well. I decided to go for some Active Release Technique (ART) treatment. ART is a state of the art soft tissue treatment technique that is based on massage technique. ART treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. It can also be used to treat headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow. These conditions all have one important thing in common. They are mostly a result of overused muscles.

Each ART treatment session I have had is a combination of examination and treatment. I go to Dr. Scott Vanderleest for treatment and he uses his evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves that are causing me pain. He then treats the abnormal tissues by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. In this way, ART is a very active method of treatment.

MS Grape Escape Wine Tour – August 2008

In August, I will be going to Vancouver Island to celebrate BC’s newest wine region and riding another bike tour for MS with my long time friend and avid cyclist Tom Croft. The first Grape Escape MS Bike Tour was held in 2002 and the event has grown in scope. The Rona MS Bike Tour Cowichan Valley Grape Escape is a two-day tour with a one-day option. The tour begins at Brentwood College in Mill Bay where we’ll ride north to discover the Cowichan Valley’s hospitality and explore its wineries, galleries and farms. Hopefully, by the time the sun sets over Mill Bay, Tom and I will be back at Brentwood College in time to enjoy evening festivities including wine tasting, musical entertainment and fine Cowichan Valley cuisine.

I know that this ride will be a blast and it will be tough. There are lots of hills that will slow me down and tire me out! However, I know the reason I am riding! I am riding so that we can move just that much closer to finding a cure for MS. My fundraising will be a part of this. I’ll be riding for and with Michele Crosby in my heart. I’ll also be riding for a friend, Bella B, that I just learned is living with MS. My small part is to make a difference.

I have been running & teaching Learn To Run clinics with the Running Room in Edmonton for a couple of years but now have switched to Cycling. I am committed to riding in 3 MS 150 Rides in 2008. In June, I’ll ride the RONA MS 150 Leduc to Camrose again. I’ll ride it with Team Pronto!

In September, I’ll be going out to Vancouver Island and along with my long time friend, Tom Croft, we’ll ride the MS WINE TOUR in the Cowichan Valley! Just the idea of a wine tour sounds perfect!

In October, I’ll be flying to New York to ride the MS NYC through the streets and tunnels of New York City! I’ll be riding this one for my dear friend Michele Crosby of Brooklyn again! I promised her that I would ride in New York so she can see me cross the finish line! I’ll also be riding for my friend Bella B, who I just learned is also living with MS.

My training has started!
